Set in the final days of Fascist Italy in 1944, the film follows four powerful men who imprison a group of young captives in an isolated villa, subjecting them to a series of increasingly disturbing acts of humiliation and cruelty. Through its deliberately confrontational imagery, the film examines authoritarian power, corruption, dehumanization, and the abuse of absolute control.

Inspired by the writings of the Marquis de Sade, Pasolini transposes the eighteenth-century work into the political landscape of wartime Italy. The result is a bleak and deeply unsettling work of political and philosophical cinema that continues to provoke debate among critics, scholars, and film enthusiasts decades after its release.

This Criterion Collection DVD edition presents Pasolini’s 1975 film with extensive supplemental material exploring its production, themes, and lasting cultural impact. The two-disc set includes documentaries, interviews, a theatrical trailer, and a substantial booklet featuring essays by prominent writers and film critics. An important collectible for Criterion completists, international cinema enthusiasts, and collectors of challenging art-house films.

Product Details

Title: Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom

Original Release Year: 1975

Criterion DVD Release: 2008 edition

Format: DVD

Edition: The Criterion Collection, Spine #17

Number of Discs: 2

Included: Criterion booklet with essays and excerpts from the film’s production diary

Genre: Drama, Art-House, Political Cinema

Director: Pier Paolo Pasolini

Written By: Pier Paolo Pasolini

Based On: The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade

Starring: Paolo Bonacelli, Giorgio Cataldi, Umberto P.
