Z (VHS, 1997) – Costa-Gavras – Yves Montand – Fox Lorber – Letterboxed French Political Thriller
A gripping, award-winning political thriller, Z is the landmark 1969 film from director Costa-Gavras that exposes the corruption, violence, and conspiracies lurking behind a seemingly democratic government. Inspired by the assassination of Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis, this internationally acclaimed film delivers a tense, investigative story that remains powerful and relevant.
When a prominent left-wing political activist known as the Deputy is killed in what authorities claim is a traffic accident, a determined magistrate begins investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. As witnesses come forward and evidence reveals a network of political interference and military complicity, the investigation threatens to expose a much larger conspiracy. Featuring Yves Montand, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Irene Papas, Z blends suspenseful storytelling with sharp political commentary.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Film Editing and nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture, Z is an essential title for fans of international cinema, classic political thrillers, and socially conscious filmmaking. This 1997 Fox Lorber Home Video VHS release features a letterboxed presentation and subtitles, making it a compelling addition to a collection of foreign-film classics and boutique-era home video.
