Tenderness of the Wolves VHS (1973 Film, 1999 Release) – Kurt Raab – Anchor Bay Collector’s Edition – German Horror Crime Drama – Widescreen
A disturbing cult classic from German filmmaker Ulli Lommel, Tenderness of the Wolves (Die Zärtlichkeit der Wölfe) is a chilling crime drama inspired by the real-life murders committed by German serial killer Fritz Haarmann. Produced by legendary filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, this dark and unsettling film blends psychological horror, grim historical atmosphere, and an unflinching portrait of a predator hiding in plain sight.
Set in postwar Germany, the film follows Fritz Haarmann, a seemingly ordinary man who uses his connections and reputation as a police informant to conceal his horrific crimes. As young men disappear, Haarmann continues to move through society with disturbing ease, exploiting the trust of those around him. His increasingly violent behavior and manipulative relationships gradually expose the horrifying reality beneath his outwardly respectable façade.
Kurt Raab delivers a chilling lead performance as Haarmann, supported by Jeff Roden, Margit Carstensen, Ingrid Caven, and Fassbinder himself in a supporting role. Directed by Ulli Lommel and written by Raab, the film is an important entry in 1970s German cult cinema and a memorable discovery for collectors of international horror, exploitation, and obscure VHS releases.
