A wonderfully obscure entry in the Universal Monsters/Universal Horror VHS canon, The Monster and the Girl is a bizarre 1941 blend of horror, crime, science fiction, and revenge. The story follows a man who is framed for murder and executed, only for a mad scientist to transplant his brain into the body of an ape—setting the stage for a very unusual revenge tale.

Starring Ellen Drew, Robert Paige, Paul Lukas, and George Zucco, this black-and-white cult classic has become a particularly interesting title for Universal Monsters collectors. Although originally produced and released by Paramount, the film was later incorporated into Universal’s classic horror/monster home-video collections.

The Universal VHS release is an excellent addition for collectors looking beyond the better-known Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolf Man titles and hunting for the more obscure corners of the Universal horror catalog.
