Touch of Evil VHS (1998) – Charlton Heston, Orson Welles, Janet
Leigh – Universal Pictures – Classic Film Noir Thriller
A landmark of film noir from legendary filmmaker Orson Welles, Touch of Evil is a dark, atmospheric thriller filled with corruption, murder, and moral ambiguity. This 1998-era release is a compelling addition for collectors of classic Hollywood cinema and vintage VHS.
When a bomb explodes at the U.S.–Mexico border, Mexican narcotics investigator Mike Vargas becomes involved in the investigation. He soon clashes with Hank Quinlan, a powerful local police captain whose reputation for solving crimes hides a disturbing willingness to manipulate evidence. As Vargas digs deeper, he begins to suspect Quinlan is framing suspects to maintain his seemingly flawless record. The investigation becomes a dangerous battle between justice and corruption, threatening Vargas and his wife, Susan.
Directed by and starring Orson Welles, Touch of Evil features Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, and Joseph Calleia. Renowned for its striking cinematography, tense atmosphere, and iconic opening sequence, the film remains one of the defining works of film noir. The 1998 reconstruction is notable for re-editing the film in accordance with Welles’s detailed memo outlining his intended changes.
